….due to a lack of understanding of what is permissible in the Taraweeh and what is not, the prayer may even become a matter of tension; differences become apparent and views are expressed. Personal ideologies start to interfere with the general benefit of the people, and thus, the whole purpose of the prayer is destroyed.

So we deemed it to be in best interest to publish this small but extremely beneficial treatise, as a series of fataawah by our late beloved sheikh, Sheikh Abdul-Azeez bin Baaz, may Allah raise him amongst the prophets and righteous. This treatise clearly demonstrates his wisdom in dealing with affairs which may be points of dispute in the Taraaweeh. He sheds light upon many issues in respect to their permissibility, and one may even find that some issues have much more flexibility than is perceived.

In the month of Ramadaan it is very important that we spent a few moments to understand some of the wisdoms and lessons that we can learn from this month of fasting. Unfortunately, many Muslims come in to this month and they are as a companion of the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Let it not be that the day that you fast and the day that you break fast be equal.”

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) addressed his companions on the last day of Sha`ban, saying, “Oh people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month; a month in which is a night better than a thousand months; month in which Allah has made it compulsory upon you to fast by day, and voluntary to pray by night. Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Heaven. It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer’s sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast, shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all.” [Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah]

How to Meet Ramadaan – al-‘Allaamah Ahmad Muhammad Shaakir (may Allaah have mercy upon him)

via How to Meet Ramadaan – al-‘Allaamah Ahmad Muhammad Shaakir (may Allaah have mercy upon him).

How to Prepare for Ramadaan

The Muhaddith of Egypt, al-‘allaamah Ahmad Muhammad Shaakir, may Allaah have mercy upon him

The month of Ramadaan has almost approached you – the month of fasting, the month of worship, the month of the elevation of the soul and its purification.

You may reach tomorrow morning as fasting people – have you made the necessary preparations for meeting it? Have you taken yourselves into account, counting the good you have done, praising Allah for it and asking Him to increase upon it, or the evil you have done so that you can be sorry for it and repent to Allaah and seek His forgiveness from it and asking Him to protect you from returning to it?

This is how the month of Ramadaan is to be received. I fear that many people understand that Ramadan is to be received with official celebrations; preparing for excellence in food and drink; preparing different kinds of cuisine and drink; preparing different types of games and amusement for the late evenings and not thinking beyond this!

O respected people! Allaah has legislated fasting for you as a purification of your souls and as a means of protection for the soul against the tyranny of the body and its desires – He did not legislate it solely that you taste the pangs of hunger and thirst of drink. For this reason the messenger of Allaah sall Allaahu ‘alahi wa sallam said, “Whoever does not give up lying speech (false statements) and acting on those lies and evil actions, etc., Allaah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink.” [al-Bukhaari: 1903].

Allaah prescribed upon us fasting the day of Ramadaan and standing its night; He made it a month of worship with remembrance of Allaah, recitation of the Qur’aan and frequent prayer – especially the night prayer, the reward for which He has made the greatest reward.

And in the authentic hadeeth on the authority of the messenger of Allaah sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, “Every action of the son of Aadam is multiplied – a good deed is worth tenfold to 700 times its value. Allaah says, ‘Except for fasting, which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it. [the son of Aadam] leaves their desires and subsistence for my sake’. There are two pleasures for the person observing the fast – one at the time of breaking the fast and the other at the time when he will meet his lord. And the breath of the fasting person is sweeter smelling for Allaah than the fragrance of musk.” [Muslim: 1151].

O respected people, indeed I see many of that which we have taken as customs during fasting that negates its reality – rather that which diminishes its reward – rather that which increases an individual in sin. We have understood the standing of the night [qiyyaam al-layl] to be staying awake at night. We have begun spending our evenings in cafes, not thinking about anything other than amusement and games until very late at night. Then we eat whatever we wish to eat and awaken exhausted and tired – our chests tightened, our senses muddled and our manners ill to the extent that two people will not talk except that anger is flared up, turmoil ensues and coarse language follows – as is what you see the case being. You all know as you may excuse your companion as he is fasting. And I do not make anyone an exception to this – except those who Allaah has protected.

So look, ponder and compare this widespread irregular state when fasting with the saying of the messenger of Allaah sall Allaahu ‘alahi wa sallam, “So when it is the day of the fast of one of you, there is no sexual relations with one’s wife, nor behaving foolishly and impudently and if someone curses or fights with them, they should say, ‘I am fasting.’” [Muslim: 1151]. And this is because the fasting individual should have a tranquil soul, pleasing character, who put at the fore of their minds that fasting is a barrier for them against sin; against bad character; against disobedience; against idle speech and against evil talk and acting upon it.

And that which is befitting during this blessed month, if you pay heed to my advice, is that you adhere to your legislated way [Shariyyah] in your fasting – that you are moderate in your eating and drinking when breaking fast and at suhoor and that you dedicate your evenings, if you stay awake in the evenings, to reciting the Qur’aan and pondering over its meanings. And whosoever from you has the ability to stand in prayer, then they should do so. And that is that they pray what Allaah wills in their house or masjid. And this is the Salaati Taraaweeh, that has been changed from its original form. Those praying now flip speedily shortly after salaatil Ishaa, in a prayer that does not benefit, nor is accepted. The prayer is that which has humility and tranquillity in it and the more the person praying delays it till after the last third of the night, the better.

Then you should sleep that which Allaah wills you to sleep and then wake up before salaatil Fajr and eat a light meal for suhoor and then pray Fajr. Then, if you wish, you can sleep or begin going about your business and affairs.

As for those who eat just before going to bed and then wake until after the sun has risen, they have contravened the sunnah of Islaam with regards to the suhoor and I fear that their abandoning of the Fajr prayer will negate the reward they receive from their fast. So in reality, they have neither fasted, nor eaten. And Allaah has no need for them to leave their food and drink, as they have not followed His command, nor have they taken the sunnah of His prophet as they have purposefully left off Salatul Fajr in its correct time.

O respected people: The nations are presently melting in fire, as a punishment of that which they have disbelieved in from the favours of Allaah. And perhaps Allaah has protected the Islaamic states from much of that which afflicts other than them for a wisdom He knows and a great occurance He is saving for them – that He returns Islaam to its glory. That the Muslims are rulers of the world as they once were. However, this is if they are [true] Muslims, adhering to their religion, establishing His Shariyyah and seeking guidance by His guidance.

So seek lessons [from this] and fear your lord, for you may see those who dilute the Muslims with evil actions that I fear Allaah will blind them with punishment by reason of it. And you will see those outwardly declaring their evil deeds, not fearing Allaah or feeling shame from the people, or fearing the consequences of that which they do.

And from that which we see them doing, outwardly calling their lord to war, is their openly breaking fast in Ramadaan in the streets, public spaces and government buildings, claiming that they are seeking solace in that which they claim is freedom of the individual. But freedom is not like this and this is not how the nations should be in their adherence to their cultures and the manifest signs of their religion. This action harms the truthful Muslims in their consciousness and their hearts.

And Allaah has given success to the righteous one, the noble leader, he of the lofty rank, Mustapha an-Nuhaas, as he recently had a great book published in this regard, to preserve the nobility of the Muslims, ease their consciousness and lift the hurt from their hearts and ordered that none breaking fast in Ramadaan should openly declare their breaking of the fast – Muslim or non-Muslim – out of respect for this ummah’s right to adhere to the tenets of its faith and practices. His actions have been the actions of a man who knows what he wants and knows how to put matters in their rightful places.

Seeking His aid, and relying upon Him,

Ahmad Muhammad Shaakir

Where is your submission?

Sheikh Ibn Uthaimeen (رحمه الله) said:

O Muslims! How do you lose the Prayer (by neglecting it and praying out of its time) while it is the connection between you and your Lord? If you don’t have this connection between you and your Lord, then where is the Ubudiyyah (slavery and servitude), and the love for Allaah and the submission to him?

via Where is your submission?.

لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له / Laa ilaha ‘illa Allaahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu

The Messenger of Allaah -صلى الله عليه وسلم – said :

Whoever says :

‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, to Him belongs the Dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things.’

one hundred times in one day, then it is equivalent to, him freeing ten slaves, and a hundred good deeds are written for him, and a hundred bad deeds are erased, and it is a protection for him against shaytaan during that day until the evening, and no one comes with a better deed than him except for the man who does more actions than him.

The Ruling of Celebrating the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Birthday

Transalated by: Mohamed Mansour

The sheikh has been asked as in “Fatawa sheikh Mohammad Al Salih Al Othaimeen”, prepared and organized by Ashraf Abdel Maksoud (1 / 126)

What is the ruling of celebrating the prophet’s birthday?

He answered:

We see that one’s faith can’t be perfected until he loves the messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and glorifies him with what he should glorify him with, and with what is suitable for him (صلى الله عليه وسلم), and there is no doubt that the sending of the messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and I don’t say his birth, but his sending as he wasn’t a messenger until he was sent, as people of knowledge have said, he has been informed by Iqra’ (Surah Al-‘Alaq) and has been sent by Al-Muddaththir (Surah Al-Muddaththir), and there is no doubt that his sending is a benefit to the whole mankind as Allah has said: Say (O Mohammad, صلى الله عليه وسلم) “O mankind!, verily I am sent to you all as the messenger of Allah, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. None has the right to be worshiped but he. It is he who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and his messenger, the prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Mohammad, صلى الله عليه وسلم), who believes in Allah and his words, and follow him so that you may be guided.” Al-‘Araf: 158.

And if he was so, then as a part of our glorification, respect, and politeness towards him, and as a part of taking him as a leader and someone to follow, is not to exceed than the worships he has legislated for us, because the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) died and there was nothing good for his nation but he has showed it and has ordered us to do, and there was nothing evil for his Ummah, but he has clarified it and warned us from. So, as we believe in him as a leader and someone to follow, we don’t have the right to celebrate his birth or his sending, as celebration means happiness, joy, and showing glorification, and all these things are types of worship that get us closer to Allah, so we are not allowed to legislate in worships but what Allah and his messenger has legislated. So, celebrating the birthday is considered innovation, and the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Every innovation is misguidance.” He has said this is general word, and he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is the best to know what he says, the most eloquent in what he speaks, and the most advising in what he guides to, there is no doubt in this, and the messenger hasn’t excluded anything of the innovations that is not misguidance, and it is well known that misguidance is the opposite of guidance. That’s why The Al-Nasa’i reported another narration: “Every misguidance is in hellfire”, therefore if celebrating his birthday (صلى الله عليه وسلم) one of the things liked by Allah and his messenger, then it would have been permissible, and if it was permissible, then it would have been preserved, as Allah has ensured preserving his rulings, and if it was preserved, the guided caliphs, the companions, their followers and those who followed would have left it. Since they haven’t done anything of this, it has been know that this is not a part of the religion of Allah, and what I advice the Muslims in general with, is not to avoid such things whose legality haven’t been proved neither by the Qur’an nor by the traditions of the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم), nor in the deeds of the companions, and to pay attention to what is clear in the rulings as known obligatory and preferable deeds, and in it there is sufficiency and reform of the individual and the society.

And if you looked carefully into the conditions of those who are fond of such innovations, you will find them reluctant not only in doing preferable deeds, but also in doing duties and obligations. This is a part from the exaggeration in the prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) that is found in these celebrations, that leads to the major shirk (making partners with Allah) which causes one to get outside the religion, and that the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) have fought people for it, and have made their bloods, money, and property lawful. We hear that there are some poems that are said during these celebrations that surely causes one to get out of the religion, as they repeat the saying of the Busiri:

O the most honored creature, who can I seek for refuge

But you, when a great accident happens to me

If you weren’t to take my hand on the day of resurrection

Shaking it, then say “Oh, foot slips!”

Among your generosity are this life and the other one

And among your knowledge is the knowledge of the tablet and the pen

Such attributes are due only to Allah, and I am astonished by who says such words. If he understands what he is saying, then how can he justify saying to the prophet: “Among you generosity is this life and the other one”, and “Among” here is stating that it is part of his generosity, and “the other one” is the hereafter. So, if this life and the one to come is among the generosity of the messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), and not all his generosity, then what is left for Allah, for sure, nothing would have been left, neither in this life nor in the hereafter. And also “And among your knowledge is the knowledge of he tablet and the pen”, and “Among” here is stating that it is part of his knowledge, and I don’t know what will be left for Allah, if we talked to the messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) with such speech.

And wait my Muslim brother… If you fear Allah, then give the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) the degree Allah has given to him. He is the slave of Allah and his messenger, so say “Slave of Allah, and his messenger”. And believe in what Allah has commanded him to convey to all mankind: Say (O Mohammad, صلى الله عليه وسلم) “I don’t tell you that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor (that) I know the unseen; nor that I tell you I am an angel. I but follow what is revealed to me.” Al-An’am: 50, and what Allah has commanded him with when he said: Say (O Mohammad, صلى الله عليه وسلم) “It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to the right path.” Al-Jinn: 21, and in addition to that: Say (O Mohammad, صلى الله عليه وسلم) “None can protect me from Allah’s punishment (if I were to disobey him), nor can I find refuge except in him.” Al-Jinn: 22, even if Allah wants to do something to the messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), no one can protect him from Allah.

So, the net result of these festivals or celebrations of the prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) birthday, is not just limited to being an innovation in the religion, but also other bad things are added to it and can lead to major shirk.

Moreover, from what we have heard, there is intermixing between men and women, and there is clapping and using Duff (one-sided drum), etc.. and other bad things that no believer can have doubt in condemning them, and we are satisfied with what Allah and his messenger have legislated for us, as in it is the reform of the hearts, countries, and people.
